About Arun District

Arun district is located within West Sussex, and comprises a delightful mix of coastal and downland landscapes.

The northern half of the district falls within the South Downs National Park where you’ll find the historic town of Arundel and many smaller villages.

Ancient open countryside and wooded copses abound, and the district has a longstanding farming heritage. Outside the National Park, Arun has a wealth of valuable environmental assets including four Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI,) five sites of nature conservation importance (SNCI) and three nature reserves.

The district’s three main towns - Arundel, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton – all have strong individual characters, and are linked by good rail and road networks to beautiful Sussex villages and the south's other major towns and cities such as Brighton and Portsmouth. As you approach the coast, the two main towns are Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, and we’ve developed "Sussex by the Sea" as our holiday destination brand. Under two hours from London (Victoria Rail Station) and Gatwick Airport, thousands of people enjoy the delights of Sussex by the Sea each year, yet it rarely seems crowded. There is a wide variety of accommodation on offer, from hotels to B&Bs and caravanning / camping. A full calendar of events, peaceful countryside, and miles of clean and welcoming beaches all make Sussex by the Sea the ideal English destination.

Elected Members

Arun District Council is formed of 54 councillors from 23 wards. 2019’s elections resulted in no overall control, but the Liberal Democrats became the largest group on the Council and formed a new administration. Subsequently, two members of the Liberal Democrats chose to sit as Independents, and a by-election (for another formerly LD seat) is due to take place on 6 May 2021. The current composition is as follows:

Party / Seats

  • Conservatives / 21
  • Liberal Democrats / 18
  • Independent / 11
  • (Independent 7, Arun Independent 2, Independent Independent 2)
  • The Green Party / 2
  • Labour / 1
  • Vacant / 1

Although the Conservatives are the largest single group on the Council, an agreement between the Liberal Democrats and 7 Independent councillors ensures that the Council has political leadership.
